Maternity pictures seem to be a divisive topic amongst my friends. Either you can’t wait to take them, can’t imagine why anyone would take them, or end up doing them just because you feel like you have to. I am in the “of course you should take them” camp! I know not all of us feel beautiful when we’re pregnant, but it’s such a special and brief time of our lives that is important to capture. Also, especially if you’re pregnant with a girl, your baby is going to want to see these photos some day. The only photo I’ve seen of my mom pregnant with me is a cheap candid (in which she’s rocking the 80s maternity overalls), and I wish I had more so I could compare how I look to her!
Rita Clark of Heirloom Photo Company took our engagement and wedding photos, so it just seemed natural to have her photograph our maternity session. I love her style and I love that all of our major life milestone photos will have the same look and feel (which is why I went ahead and booked her for newborn photos as well). I not only wanted to capture Dave and me with my belly, but I wanted to take the photos at our home so that she could document the nursery and our baby’s first home. It’s likely that we’ll move before our daughter can remember this house, and I love that she’ll have these to look back on and see where we brought her home to. It also allowed us to incorporate some photos with her big fur brother, Rico. Rita spontaneously had the idea to capture some images of Dave woodworking in the garage, and those are some of my most favorite photos! Dads can be left out of the maternity photos, but I love that we got some special shots of him and I know that our baby girl will love those when she’s older.
We opted for some very casual clothes for the lifestyle indoor images in our living room, nursery and master bedroom, and then dressed up a little more for some outdoor shots in our yard. I think they came together so well and am excited to share them with you!
